Editorial Reviews

Not resting on her laurels -- 50 million records sold since her 1967 debut with "Snowbird" -- Anne Murray has teamed with legendary producer Phil Ramone on what is certainly one of the early surprises of 2008 and, moreover, one of the best recordings of her distinguished career. Many of the songs here have been mega-hits, but for this special event the Canadian thrush (whose mature voice shows an appealing rough edge these days) teamed up with a cast of all-star female vocalists and revisited some of the grand moments in her recording history. With Shelby Lynne releasing a contemporaneous tribute album to Dusty Springfield, Murray offers her own tribute to the pop-soul diva in the form of a lush, soulful duet of "I Just Fall In Love Again," with Dusty's ethereal vocal imported from her original 1979 recording, and the two voices meshing seamlessly in the aching closing verse and chorus. Lynne herself joins the proceedings on a stomping cover of Lennon-McCartney's "You Won't See Me," a real barnburner of a track made doubly incendiary by the thundering drums, soaring, Beatles-like horns, and chanting female background chorus. A beautiful orchestral arrangement and a more introspective vocal add an earthier feel to Murray's new treatment of Kenny Loggins's "Danny's Song," to which Martina McBride lends an affecting blues-tinged reading. The disc's most seductive moment is an orchestra-and-small combo waltz rendering of Murray's 1980 Grammy winner, "Could I Have This Dance," featuring a silky vocal contribution from Amy Grant. Emmylou Harris, Celtic Woman, Shania Twain, k. d. lang, and Sarah Brightman (on a feisty rendition of "Snowbird") make the most of their moments as well, and Murray knocks everything out of the park, without any performance enhancers save her own impeccable vocal artistry. October 15, 2009: I've been an admirer of Anne Murray since I first listened to one of her recordings (it was still vynil) back in my years as an adolescent. Since then I've always enjoyed her remarkable and distinctive voice, sincerity in her delivery, and the emotion she imparts to the lyrics. I was unaware of this DUETS recording until a friend of mine recommended it to me a while ago. I enjoyed it immensely; her selection of songs and singing partners could not have been better. Listening to it rekindled cherished memories of my youth and college years for which I'm deeply grateful; I've played it again and again and it always leaves me with a blissful feeling.

August 01, 2009: I have loved Anne Murray's voice since I first heard her on the radio (and this was when the "good music" was on AM!), own several of her LPs as well as CDs and once relished her performance live in the 90's (we had seats in the third row and my husband swears Anne made eye contact with him). When I saw that she had teamed up with other excellent women vocalists, I had to check out the recording. I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. There were some of my favorites of Anne's -- Danny's Song, When I Fall in Love Again, Could I Have This Dance -- and some I'd never heard -- Another Pot O'Tea, Song for the Mira, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do. On every song the two singers' voices blend or contrast or support each other, whatever is needed for that particular piece. The production is outstanding. Some of the songs make me smile, some make me cry and I wind up singing along to most of them. I especially love Time Don't Run Out on Me with Carole King (another favorite singer/songwriter), Cotton Jenny with Olivia Newton-John and Nobody Loves Me Like You Do with Dawn Langstroth (who was new to me). There's also an exceptional live recording of Anne and Celine Dion, from a PBS special I remember seeing, where Celine surprised the audience by joining Anne in "When I Fall In Love," which both recorded and has hits with. This is really a terrific CD and I have already given two as gifts.
