Dreamgirls in Concert, recorded at a gala commemorating the legendary musical's 20th anniversary, will give the many devotees of Michael Bennett's 1981 landmark show cause for elation. A gritty showbiz saga about the rise and fall of a trio of black female singers loosely modeled on the Supremes, Dreamgirls trades on characters and situations that will induce déjà vu in anyone familiar with the Motown story. This vibrant recording captures every supercharged nuance of Henry Kreiger (Side Show) and Tom Eyen's R&B-savvy score, which is celebrated as a Broadway breakthrough for its successful use of mainstream music in a traditional book musical. A runaway success, the original production of Dreamgirls racked up 1,522 performances and six Tony Awards and launched the career of Jennifer Holliday, who scored a hit with the explosive and heartbreaking "And I'm Telling You I’m Not Going." For this one-night-only benefit performance, a stellar troika of Tony-winning divas was recruited -- Audra McDonald (Ragtime) Heather Headley (Aida), and Lillias White (The Life) -- and all three create stirring, flesh-and-blood characterizations. The audibly thrilled audience spurs each cast member to a red-hot intensity that builds for more than two hours and three dozen selections before culminating in a moving and thoroughly satisfying encore of the title song. The complete score, with recitative and dialogue, is featured on this lush double-disc set, rectifying the omissions of the original-cast album. Included are favorites like "Family," "I Am Changing," "Move," and "Hard to Say Goodbye," as well as "Heavy," "It's All Over," and "Dreams Medley," all released here for the first time. This is a stunning record of a fabulous night that should, hopefully, prompt the long-overdue, full-scale revival that Dreamgirls fans continue to clamor for. David Cohen, Barnes & Noble
