Editorial Reviews

You wouldn't think of L.A.'s working-class South Bay district as a breeding ground for revolution, punk-rock style, but that's exactly what this sadly short-lived agit-rock trio delivered. Under the direction of singer/guitarist D. Boon (who was killed in an auto accident in 1985), the Minutemen cranked out alternately anarchic, funky, and freewheeling snippets of sound, many of which clocked in near the 60-second barrier implied in the band's name. The Minutemen reached their zenith on this breathless 44-song double album, which careens from incisive pop-culture commentaries like "Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth?" and "Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing" to bonafide beer-blast throwdowns like "D's Car Jam" and "Three Car Jam" without losing momentum for a moment. You can give Boon plenty of credit for that, but it'd be impossible to ignore the titanic rhythm section of Mike Watt and George Hurley (who would later go on to anchor fIREHOSE).
