As a member of the gospel group the Clark Sisters, powerhouse vocalist Dorinda Clark-Cole had already earned a sizable following. Now, with her self-titled solo debut, she will certainly broaden her reach even further. Clark-Cole blends contemporary and traditional gospel, then adds a touch of jazz for a superbly performed collection of gospel praise. Her vocal mastery packs an emotional wallop on songs like "No Not One" and "It's Not Me," both contemporary-style cuts that in lesser hands may have been reduced to R&B gloss. The Clark Sisters guest on "Show Me the Way," a potent plea for God's direction that blends an easy jazz vibe with voluminous vocals. Clark-Cole wrote or co-wrote 5 of the 12 tracks here, including the soaring "You Can't Hurry God," which finds the singer backed by an energetic gospel choir. Recorded live -- as are several of the tracks here -- it's one of those get-on-your-feet-and-say--amen moments that are so rarely captured on disk. Clark-Cole's solo career is off to a soaring start.
