Editorial Reviews

On this release, Southern Music combined two '70s United Artists albums by the great Doc Watson: Doc and the Boys from 1976 and Live and Pickin' from 1979 are paired on a single compact disc for this 2003 release. Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide

Mid 70s Doc & Merleby glauver

October 24, 2009: I think this collection is better than the Lonesome Road/Look Away set, probably because about 3/4 of it is live. It appears as if someone at U.A. was meddling with the Watsons' timeless sound. This shows up especially on the bonus track All I Have is Dream, on which Doc is saddled with an annoying back-up chorus. When Doc and Merle moved on to Flying Fish Records, they returned to their basic stripped down approach. You can find those recordings on the Rounder CDs Sittin' Here Pickin' the Blues and Black Mountain Rag. Doc's best U.A. CD is Memories, which was re-released on Sugar Hill. It may be out of print but is probably his best studio effort and worth hunting down..
