One of Doc Watson's finest later records, Doc Watson on Stage is a virtual travelogue of his entire career in one record, almost a greatest-hits record, live. Assisted by Merle Watson, the program flows from lightning fast hoedowns such as "Brown's Ferry Blues," where Watson picks lightning fast with a dexterity that is almost unbelievable. His feel and command of the instrument is truly incredible. "Open Up Them Pearly Gates for Me" has a similar effect. There are also numerous stories and patter (mostly about the songs) in between the cuts, and it guides you through the performance. Watson also shines on this album as well, especially his exquisite fingerpicking on "Banks of the Ohio." A timeless slice from one of the fathers of modern country music. December 07, 2002: This concert captures Doc and Merle Watson at their absolute peak. It simply must be in any collection of American folk music. For those unfamiliar with the genre, here's where to start. The vocals are very good, and the guitar work is simply perfect. Doc and Merle pick in a number of different folk styles to give a nice overview: there's the flat-picking of old fiddle tunes for which Doc is best known, but also old-time banjo on "Little Sadie", and Jimmy Rogers style on "When the Work's All Done This Fall". The very first song sets the tone: the funny silly lyrics on "Brown's Ferry Blues" is set against a blistering lead guitar that is deadly serious. In short, this is the pinnacle of all accoustic guitar and American folk music.

June 23, 2002: All '' live '' and mostly all traditional songs and folk tales. There's humor in '' live '' recordings because anyone who's anyone on stage has to incorporate a bit, especially if they're alone, and even if they're not funny. Doc Watson is funny, albeit a sort of adult-like humor, safe and humble. Lend your ears to the renditions of Carson J. Robinson's '' The Clouds Are Gwine To Roll Away '' and '' Life Gets Teejus Don't It ''. '' Roll On Buddy (aka Roll On John ), '' I am A Pilgrim '', and '' The Quaker's Cow '' are real gems. There is a depth here, as with anything '' live '', that cannot be duplicated otherwise. From start to finish, you are there. A must have for any Doc Watson fan.
