About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

A Behind the Music special usually signifies that an artist's best days lie in the past, but in the case of Daryl Hall and John Oates -- the No. 1 pop-rock duo of all time -- having a storied career hasn't put a damper on their current pursuits. After a six-year absence, Hall & Oates rally back with Do It for Love, a soulful and solidly written disc packed with songs about a lifetime's worth of romantic trials and tribulations. They rekindle the magic of their soaring harmonies on the standout title track, which offered fans a taste of their well-preserved sound when it appeared on a best-of companion disc to the aforementioned VH1 special in 2002. That song, however, only hints at the richness of the album's many musical treats. There's the Billy Mann–penned "Getaway Car," with its generous dollops of Hall's falsetto and subtle piano arrangements that suggest a Brenda Russell outtake, and a blue-eyed soul reading of the New Radicals' "Someday We'll Know," which finds the pair collaborating with Philadelphia homeboy Todd Rundgren. Other highlights include "Heartbreak Time," where Hall confirms that he's still the best white soul singer in the business, and the Oates-penned "Love in a Dangerous Time," driven by wah-wah guitar and Hammond organ (the song originally appeared on his solo disc, Phunk Shui). With Do It for Love, Hall & Oates reveal the real motivation behind their music. Dave Gil de Rubio, Barnes & Noble

December 30, 2004: After Big Bam Boom, I basically wrote Hall and Oates off. I've got all their albums from Whole Oats on. As a huge fan, I realized that the best of Hall and Oates departed after 1985. Albums such as Ooh Yeah and Change of Seasons missed the mark. These albums were still better than the majority of what was out there at the time ,however. When Marigold Sky came out, it seemed as if they were coming close to recapturing their greatness. Finally Do it For Love appears and they've done it! It seems to be a combo of the best of what they've done and they were able to put it to music like never before. This work is a masterpiece. A must have. The 3 songs, Forever For you, Do it for love and Man on a Mission are worth getting this cd alone. This album ranks up there with their previous bests-H20, Private Eyes and Voices. If this was 1982, H&O would have 1 or 2 number one hits and a third top 10 with this album for sure. Daryl's voice seems to get better with age and he always sounds about 30 like he did in the 80's. He may have the best vocal ability out there today in pop music. I don't see how they could equal or top this album in the future but I hope they'll put more original stuff out.
