Editorial Reviews

The original Dirty Dancing was set in the Catskills in 1963 but featured '80s soundtrack fodder from Patrick Swayze, Eric Carmen, and Jennifer Warnes. Havana Nights, set in Cuba in the late '50s, has a soundtrack complete with Spanish-inflected hip-hop and R&B. Oh well -- fans of era-appropriate mambo and cha-cha-chá are not the audience for this film, anyway. The younger demo will get something of an introduction to Latin music, at least in the form of contemporary standouts such as the Cuban rap ensemble Orishas (joined with Broadway vocalist Heather Headley in a nearly unrecognizable remix) and Colombia's Aterciopelados. New York's Grammy-nominated Afro-Latin powerhouse Yerba Buena represent with their savvy update "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)," but it's likely that these solid contributions will be overshadowed by Christina Aguilera's Spanish turn on "El Beso del Final," Black Eyed Peas' title track, and Carlos Santana's two cuts with crooner Jorge Moreno. The best of both worlds is Mya's "Do You Only Wanna Dance," ingeniously combining vintage mambo samples (Machito & His Afro-Cubans) and the Diwali riddim. It's reprised in a big band format to close out this tropical treat. Mark Schwartz, Barnes & Noble

August 19, 2006: When I first saw this movie I thought it was AMAZING!!!! It has been the best movie I've seen yet. After I watched it for the first time I watched it over and over again. If anybody wants to see an outstanding movie they should rent "Dirty Dancing Havana Nights". It is WAYYYY better than the original. It is very captivating movie, it made me want to get up and start dancing to the music. Romola Garia and Diego Luna are GREAT actors, and I believe they did a wonderful job doing this film.
