Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pub-rock is at the core of Dire Straits -- even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band -- their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. Knopfler also shows an inclination toward Dylanesque imagery, which enhances the smoky, low-key atmosphere of the album. While a few of the songs fall flat, the album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career. Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

September 28, 2006: Before melancholia sent Mark Knopfler's music into a deep sleep, he managed to add just enough of the stuff to make this album sing of smokey british pubs and clinging to dreams of recognition and romance. It's these topics that the album deals with so well:- the old-time swingers who can't please the crowd, the sculptor who can't please the critics. The girl going Down To The Waterline who remembers her lost boyfriend, or the one in Lions, who is "trying to find a face she can like". Knopfler's at his most poetic lyrically, but its the guitar work really injects the album with charm, and sometimes energy- Setting Me Up, The Sultans, and Waterline are all great solos. The little fills Knopfler delights in are also top notch. There's plenty to keep listeners listening on this album, and yes, Six Blade Knife is one of the highlights.

June 23, 2000: Six Blade Knife is a great song. Thats how I discovered Dire Straits. It sounds great, I love everything about it.
