About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

A nice career-spanning collection from one of the true queens of Brazilian music. Caetano Veloso's little sister proved herself one of the most powerful voices in samba, bossa nova, Tropicalia, and particularly MPB over the decades, with her dark voice working especially well in the protest song movements (she was also one of the few major stars not to go into European exile under the military regime). This album starts off with a samba duet with Gal Costa highlighting the depth of Bethânia's voice and nearly Arabic phrasing in comparison. Some jazz and Tropicalia follow, as well as a much more recent number from a 1998 album. Soft rock, MPB proper, easy listening -- all are represented along the course of the album. Unfortunately, some of her earlier work from the mid-'60s is absent from the collection, being a relatively small hole in terms of time, but larger in terms of importance in her career. Still, for a single disc covering such a vast career, this album does a fine job and makes for a good introduction to one of the major voices of a country's musical development.
