When pop celebrities decide to moonlight as children's artists, they nearly always cut a lullaby album. Anybody can sing a bunch of ballads, right? Linda Ronstadt's Dedicated to the One I Love, though, is an unusually fine effort, clever in concept and breathtakingly beautiful in execution. Here, Ronstadt's taken rock 'n' roll standards like the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and "Baby, I Love You" -- even, tongue-in-cheekily enough, Queen's "We Will Rock You" -- and interpreted them literally: "Baby" means "infant" and "rock" refers to what you do with that infant in a chair. Accompanied by the heavenly sounds of harp, flute, strings, and acoustic guitar, Ronstadt performs these songs in a hushed whisper, her voice recorded in multiple layers, like a cloud parfait. (The pop diva says she was inspired by Beach Boy Brian Wilson's "Good Vibrations" approach to record production, and here she includes Wilson's ravishing "In My Room" as a tribute.) Dedicated to the One I Love is a first-class ticket to dreamland. Moira McCormick, Barnes & Noble
