About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Pristine one moment and full of anarchic clutter the next, Björk's 1993 Debut is an artistic manifesto charting almost every inch of available musical territory. Saxophone choirs butt heads with Middle Eastern rhythms and house anthems, and a quiet, restive tune explodes into a big-band blowout to create a sonic soup as rich and tasty as any this decade. Before going solo, Björk spent six years as the lead singer of Iceland's best-known pop group, the Sugarcubes, but little of that work prepared us for the cornucopia of musical ideas on Debut. On "Venus as a Boy," her voice throbs with innocent longing, but on "There's More to Life than This," it sounds almost sinister. Ultimately, Debut doesn't open doors for the electronica crowd as much as it obliterates old structures and builds completely new ones in its place. Martin Johnson, Barnes & Noble

one of my favorite albums of the 90sby Anonymous

March 14, 2000: I can't explain it completely, but Bjork has this thing in her voice that always reminds me of Donovan. And her English reminds me of Laetitia Sadier or Nico...not all the words come out 'right', but still sound beautiful. She's gentle, bubbling and explosive - a marvelous, unpredictable singer. Her affection for Old show songs adds a nice dimension to her overall presentation - a respect for things that have gone before.
