Editorial Reviews

While she prepares a proper follow-up to her hit Tanto Tempo, sensual Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto affords fans this low-key collection, previously unavailable in the U.S., recorded in 1991. The daughter of bossa nova originator João Gilberto is arguably more in her element on De Tarde, Vendo o Mar, a buoyant set of Brazilian pop void of Tanto Tempo's lounge-adelic trappings, which were more a reflection of Gilberto's gifted producer, Suba, than the singer's own fascinations. Fans shouldn't balk -- the ace accompanists on this Rio recording infuse the tracks (all by Japanese songwriter Yumi Mastutoya and translated into Portuguese, curiously enough) with irresistible swing. Banzai, the group led by bassist Luizião Maia and anchored by Jobim sideman Paulinho Braga on drums, is typically adept at the kind of light, jazzy fusion that delights Brazilians and Japanese alike -- if anything, the production is a little dated, with David Sanborn-style sax solos and the occasional gloppy keyboard. But Bebel is in fine voice, subdued and commanding at once, and those who don't want to wait tanto tempo -- such a long time, that is -- for her next album will welcome this lost gem.
