About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

By alternating moments of meticulous songcraft with long blasts of raw, cathartic noise, Sonic Youth accomplished the unlikely with this 1988 recording -- they got signed to a major label contract. SY began in the early '80s mostly interested in blasts of guitar feedback and distortion. As their interest in songs emerged they used compositional form to heighten the emotional impact of the dissonant bursts. Daydream Nation, a 71-minute sprawl, features some of their best tunes, including "Teenage Riot," "Eric's Trip," and "Kissability." The album established them as one of the premiere indie-rock bands of the '80s. Fans feared that with the major label money behind them, they might abandon their arty principles. If anything, guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, bassist Kim Gordon, and drummer Steve Shelley have diversified into many other musical and fashion endeavors. And as Sonic Youth they continue to record high caliber and completely unique music. Martin Johnson, Barnes & Noble

April 27, 2005: By far the best Sonic Youth album (though the others nearly fill my Top 20 albums list) Daydream Nation is simply (and not so simply) a masterpiece. It starts with the kinda poppy "Teen Age Riot" then flows into the feedback and noise fest that is the middle section of "Silver Rocket." This album is perfect in every way; from simple melodies to alternately tuned mayhem. And who new that a song, "Providence", could be made up of a answering machine message, a piano, and the sound of a 100-watt Fender amp overheating and finally exploding. I mean, only a band with the knowledge and skill (and maybe a little craziness) such as SY could come up with stuff like that and make it work. Thurston's songs, Kim's songs, Lee's songs they're all just pure genuis and talent. Hands down my favorite album ever.

April 18, 2005: After listening to this album, and to some of Sonic Youth's other album, I decided that Daydream Nation is without any question, the Best Sonic Youth album. THe First song on the album, Teenage Riot, is completely flawless, like many of the other songs on the album. The guitars on the album, will blow you away, they make say, I've never heard a guitar sound like that. I recommend this album to anybody who takes music seriously.
