About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Day & Night is Gota Yashiki's third CD for the Instinct Records label and features the percussionist, producer, and writer on 11 songs either written or co-written by him. The contemporary jazz sensation uses an eclectic mix of programming and United Kingdom studio musicians to pull off a groove-oriented CD that fully utilizes their skills. Saxophonists Ian Kirkham and Neil Hitchcock, bassists Laurence Cottle and Paul Turner, guitarists Kenji Jammer and Mark Jaimes, keyboardist Neil Cowley of the Brand New Heavies, and percussionist Miles Bould of Sting's band form the project's core while Gota's excellent programming, percussion, and nylon-string guitar works provide ample room for listeners to expand their appreciation of his talents. The better songs include the opener, "Crusin' Your Way"; the title track, "Day & Night," primarily for its guitar melody; "In the Past," for its great sax work; "What's Up Charlie?" for its heavy groove, horn charts, and bass guitar lines; and "Unforgettable Feeling." Based on the critical acclaim and chart success of Gota's previous releases, It's So Different Here and Let's Get Started, and because Day & Night is consistent with their compositional muscle, this third release should strengthen Gota's position as a major player on the contemporary jazz scene.
