From the rhapsodic opening to the victorious closing hymn, DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY casts a warm and dreamy spell. Norwegian composer Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnula Sherry created this album to celebrate the new millennium and their hopes for an eternity of love. The songs -- prayers, lullabies, and requiems sung in Norwegian, Irish, and English -- are lush and richly resonant: Violin, harp, traditional Celtic instruments, and orchestra seem to inhabit a magical, visionary realm. The Irish choir Anúna offers moments of pastoral grandeur on "In Our Tears/Dona Nobis Pacem," while Norwegian folk singer Anne Karin Kaasa calls like a siren in "Evensong." Irish dances and a cocky baroque gavotte liven the pace, but DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY is essentially an expansive embrace. The disc closes with the title track, a joyous march into the future that will give you goosebumps. Carol Wright, Barnes & Noble
