Editorial Reviews

Although Rico Bell might get some attention from alt-country or Americana fans, his primary roots seem to lie with singer-songwriters like Bruce Springsteen or John Hiatt, and his sound is closer to '80s roots-rock than to traditionalist country; the overly polished production on Darkside of the Mersey only strengthens that impression. However, Bell's skilled storytelling more than makes up for that minor flaw. His lyrics are deceptively simple, encapsulating complex emotions in everyday language, and the Snake Handlers have just the right touch in supporting him musically. All in all, Darkside of the Mersey is a pretty impressive effort. Steve Huey, All Music Guide
