About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

While conventional wisdom would have you believe that nice guys finish last, that adage hasn't rung all that true in the '00s musical world, what with the success of folks like James Blunt and this Canadian singer-songwriter, who mines similar territory. Powter broke through in Europe, where his first single, "Bad Day," rose to the upper reaches of the charts in nearly a dozen countries -- thanks in part to its appearance in a ubiquitous Coke commercial and in part to its impossible-to-shake melody. As evidenced by that song, Powter is a sensitive sort, and this mind-set dovetails nicely with his flair for crafting heart-directed, piano-inflected melodies. He's pretty much a traditionalist -- the slowly building, subtly enveloping "Free Loop" glides along, evoking thoughts of "Hey Jude" -- but he's not that easy to pigeonhole. He's as capable of trying his hand at a classic rock power ballad, which he does on the swaying "Lost on the Stoop," as he is batting flirtatious bedroom eyes on the seductive "Hollywood." Now and again, Powter ventures into territory where his easygoing attitude is more a hindrance than a help, most notably on the faux-funk of "Lie to Me." But more important, he seems to be getting a handle on where his strengths lie. And that points to many a good day in his future. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble
