About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Maybe the best place to start listening to DANGEROUS CURVES is with the last track. On King Curtis's old R&B hit "Soul Serenade" guitarist Jeff Golub gets truly down and dirty, and laying on the mellow grit suits him well. Taking his sweet time on this cut, Golub lets the blues tell the tale. Not that his funky chops are hiding out on the rest of the recording. From the title track on, the former axeman for Avenue Blue displays some serious playing that reveals a deep and abiding affection for R&B and the blues. When wrapped up in melodic gumdrops like "Another Friday Night," "Step Aside," "No Two Ways About It" and "Droptop" Golub's guitarising takes on an expressiveness that sets him apart from flashier, but emptier, smooth-jazz fretmen. Golub's got the smarts to know that a simple bend of the strings can say more than the buzzing of flying fingers hitting thousands of notes per tune. Just hear him give a lovely, and deeply funky, reading to Grover Washington's hit "Mr. Magic." Golub has obviously done some hard listening to such jazzy R&B guitar masters as Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale and their influence has paid off well. William Pearl, Barnes & Noble
