Hardly a Sophie B. Hawkins greatest-hits collection, Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover is more an overview of Hawkins' two albums with Columbia, 1992's Tongues and Tails and 1994's Whaler, than an actual comprehensive overview (which makes sense, as the album was put out by Sony), with the first four tracks from the former record and the next seven from the latter. Of course, the title song is included here, as are her other big singles like "Only Love" (in an acoustic version), "I Want You," and "Right Beside You" (as a club mix), though "As I Lay Me Down" is strangely missing. It's definitely not a retrospective of her entire career, nor is it representative of all that she can do, but for those who only want to focus on the years in which Hawkins had the most fame, it's a decent choice.
