About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

The debut disc from Crystal Aikin, winner of Black Entertainment Television's "Sunday Best" gospel competition, includes 10 stirring songs of faith and hope. Aikin's dynamic, anointed vocals command her audience's attention and inspire foot-tapping and hand-clapping praise and worship. The disc, produced by PAJAM (J Moss, Dorinda Clark-Cole) and Dre & Vidal (Alicia Keys, Usher), is a rousing mix of contemporary gospel, jazz, and R&B. Standouts include "A Song About Jesus," "What If (He Said No)," and the lead single "I Desire More." Cystal Aikin is more than a gospel singer. She uses her God-given instrument to awaken spirituality through song. Tracy E. Hopkins, Barnes & Noble

August 10, 2009: This is one of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time. Her voice is incredible and so diverse. One of things I like about this CD is that its so eclectic. Its not just gospelly. There are tunes that minister, some that make you think and some that are just fun. So many different styles. And the lyrics--each song is a ministry in itself with its own special message. Can't wait to see what's next. Indeed, I desire more.

April 10, 2009: This is a fabulous debut CD from a gifted and anointed young woman. Some listeners complain that the CD lacks enough "churchy" tracks. If this reference is to old-school, stomp-your feet, clap-your-hands gospel, it's true that only two of the ten tracks would immediately call forth that response. But that doesn't mean that the remaining tracks have nothing to say. Others maintain that the CD misrepresents Ms. Aikin. On the contrary, it reveals the depth of her talent and ability to minister to everyone without losing the message or her vocal or spiritual identity. Granted, the CD offers a variety of styles, but that's one of it's appealing qualities. It carries you on a spiritual journey that takes you full circle. You begin with "I Desire More", which gets your attention, and while you're listening, it asks you to contemplate a simple question: "What If He Said No?" Once you've considered the ramifications of that question, you're ready to rejoice with Ms. Aikin and company when they declare, "He's Worthy." Ms. Aikin then reminds you that everyone needs "A Song About Jesus", and invites you to praise Him in "Lord, You Reign Forever", acknowledging that your business 'ain't nothin' without a little Jesus in it'. The next track, "Love Him", sends a message to those who'd ask you to put aside even a small bit of your religion for them or their causes, while encouraging anyone who feels caught between He and (s)he/they to think about what the two parties bring to the table. Track seven reminds you that, because of all she's sang before, the "Clouds" have rolled away. You can always "Turn to Him"-especially during the lonely, difficult times. As your journey nears completion in "Even Me", Ms. Aikin reassures you that, no matter your circumstances, you have a spiritual assignment that only you can complete; God willed it so. She and Natalie Grant pray aloud, for all of us, "Breathe On Me". By the time you're done with this one, you're reaching for the replay button, ready to start the journey anew. It's unfortunate to some extent that Ms Aikin's first recording venture resulted from her winning a national contest. The competitive spin that reviewers have put on this CD and that of the contest runner-up, Shari Addison, suggests that the 'competition' may never end, which doesn't do either young woman justice. Each deserves to stand as an independent artist. So, decide for yourself. If you haven't heard this CD, you're missing it. If you've only heard it once or twice, you still haven't 'gotten' it; it gets better with hearing. Crystal Aikin is a powerful, moving, and masterful vocalist. You owe it to yourself to hear her.
