Editorial Reviews

Crunk and Disorderly rounds up some of the Dirty South's hottest rappers circa 2003, compiling an assortment of largely unexceptional yet largely unreleased material that should interest diehards and those looking for a general down-South sampler. Some of the more noteworthy names offering unreleased tracks here include Lil Jon & the East Side Boys ("What You Gonna Do"), Lil' Flip ("Throw Up Yo' Hood"), Pastor Troy ("I'm Outside"), Three 6 Mafia ("Nan Notha"), YoungBloodZ ("All Pro"), T.I. ("Turn It Up"), and Trina ("Get Loose"). In addition, there are a few holiday-themed inclusions: Ying Yang Twins ("Ho! Ho!"), Bone Crusher ("Guess Who's Comin to Town"), David Banner ("It's Christmas Time [Jingle Bells]"), and Killer Mike ("A Christmas Grind"). And the collection concludes with Lil Jon's "Throw It Up" remix featuring Young Buck of G Unit. It's a mighty rowdy conclusion, and undoubtedly the best inclusion here. On the whole, however, Crunk and Disorderly doesn't offer too much that measures up to the quality of "Throw It Up." In fact, most everything here is marginal at best, especially the holiday songs, which are novel yet nonetheless unexceptional. Regardless, the collection does showcase some of the South's finest hardcore rap talent and makes for a fine sampler that should engage diehards as well as curious newcomers, if not casual listeners.
