Editorial Reviews

With what is quite possibly the most talented crew ever assembled to play film music -- Scherer on processed guitar and sampler, harpist Zeena Parkins, sitar player Frank Menusan, and percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Cyro Baptista -- Peter Scherer's Cronologia is filed with compositions that delight the listener in their fragile beauty. Written for four independent films, the pieces are largely atmospheric, featuring shuffling rhythms and long, minimalist hums and sighs. The music is never gloomy, but often manages to convey a feeling of apprehension and danger. Scherer's ethereal compositions ensure that the performances are collaborative efforts, with no one musician taking center stage but instead a beautiful balance achieved between them. The multinational performers lend a worldly touch to the album, but again, the contributions come from all corners, with Zeena Parkins' harp sounding every bit as exotic as Frank Menusan's sitar. Each track has something to offer, but a few shine as being truly inventive: The remix of "Reaper" shows more aggressive force than the other, more delicate tunes, and the other "Reaper" has multi-layered polyrhythms that stand out. Overall, this is an album of good depth that is well-constructed.~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide All Music Guide

April 23, 2004: I've never heard Peter's band, but I bought this CD because I loved his release "Very neon Pet" which is incredibily fascinating, and I think now unavailable but may be available on the website label Tzadik. Anyway, Chronologia is for fans of classical-minimal-noise-dark ambient music. Stand out tracks are many, especially "New Dracula" which nails the sound of Dracula swooping down. amazing
