About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Maybe there’s something in the water, but New Jersey has brought out the pop poet in a select few brilliant artists. Folkie Richard Shindell may not tread the same musical territory as Bruce Springsteen, but the intensity of feeling and adept imagery of Shindell’s best songs bring to mind the Boss at his most expressive.. On this live recording, the singer-songwriter (whose high-pitched singing can be reminiscent of REM’s Michael Stipe) performs both his own highly crafted, and, at times, emotionally piercing songs, as well as some spot-on covers, including Little Feat’s trucker ballad “Willin’,” and even Springsteen’s “ Fourth of July, Asbury Park (Sandy).” He’s joined by Lucy Kaplansky -- his former partner from the folk unit Cry, Cry, Cry -- on vocal harmonies and makes telling use of violins and exotic string instruments throughout. Drawing on material from Shindell's previous albums, all highly acclaimed, Courier gives us a fine overview of a well-kept secret who deserves to be a household name. William Pearl, Barnes & Noble

June 22, 2002: Richard Shindell is a marvelous songwriter with a cool voice resembling an older Michael Stipe. This live collection includes songs from most of his albums and is a great introduction to this wonderful performer. Reunion Hill is especially moving with Larry Campbell's violin setting the mood perfectly.
