Editorial Reviews

Over the past decade, Andrew Manze has recorded large portions of the Baroque violin repertory, from the famous sonatas of Bach and Handel to lesser-known works by Biber, Marini, and Pandolfi. Now he finally turns his attention to what he calls "arguably the finest and most influential [set of violin sonatas] ever assembled." And Manze rises to the challenge with perhaps his most dazzling recording yet. He provides his own, often elaborate, ornamentation, and it sounds as spontaneous and expressive as would have been expected in the composer's day. Unlike most other recently recorded versions, which employ a large, varied continuo group (some combination of harpsichord, organ, theorbo, and viola da gamba), Manze is accompanied by harpsichord alone. The result may sound comparatively less rich, but the gain in intimacy and transparency is its own reward. Indeed, Richard Egarr's imaginative harpsichord playing seems to be set slightly in the background of the sonic picture, putting the spotlight on Manze's extraordinarily detailed performance. The music is marvelous, of course, full of color and memorable tunes and requiring playing of great sweetness as well as bracing, virtuoso flights of fancy. It's "an A-to-Z of violin technique circa 1700," Manze writes, and there is no doubt that this violinist's skill would have awed old Corelli himself. A major achievement, then, and a recording to savor. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble
