About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Aaron Copland's music evokes stereotypical images of the American heartland: sprawling prairies, wagons on the trail, cowboys, and wholesome Shaker simplicity. So it may come as a shock to discover that Copland was born in bustling Brooklyn and was a lifelong New Yorker. Still, no other composer's music has been used so frequently -- in films and TV commercials -- to represent the pioneer spirit of the good ol' USA. Even folks who've never heard of Copland will recognize the "Hoedown" from "Rodeo," "Simple Gifts" from "Appalachian Spring," and the rousing, patriotic "Fanfare for the Common Man." Leonard Bernstein's performances had the composer's stamp of approval, and they have yet to be bettered. Andrew Farach-Colton, Barnes & Noble

April 22, 2004: As long as we have Copeland, we have the heartbeat of America keeping us alive. His music circulates in us like the Fourth of July and dawn touching the Rocky Mountains. It is true that Berstein's interpretations have the hasty rhythm of early jazz and there are probably richer renditions. But raw energy and strong interpretations give the music the vitality America has always had. When we don't have it anymore, we will be effete and without our pulse. Lose Berstein's strings in Appalachian Spring, and the love goes out of the world.

June 27, 2000: Copland has made a wonderful impact on American music. Teachers, this selection is great for use in the classroom. Appalachian Spring teaches geography. Listen and draw to music. Copland's music is used all the time in advertisements. A wonderful American composer.
