The Mike Frost Project's Comin Straight at Ya is a fun set played by a versatile group of Chicago-based musicians. While some of the songs sound like a soul-jazz outing from the mid-'60s, other selections are firmly in the hard bop genre, while trumpeter Steve Frost's playing hints at earlier stylists. Both of the Frost brothers (leader-tenorman Mike and trumpeter/flugelhornist Steve) are excellent soloists, organist Tom Vaitsas co-wrote six of the selections with Mike Frost and the rhythm section is solid, swinging and (when called for) grooving. Most of the selections have catchy melodies (including "Little Sunflower" and the rarely performed "Dizzy Atmosphere") and although none of the musicians are household names (at least not outside of Chicago), they add color, swing and creativity to the music.
