About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

A triumph on almost every level, Come On Come On spun Nashville's expectations of what a country album should be completely around. Carpenter isn't your typical country star: She's Ivy League educated (Brown); she's, um, mature (as opposed to being yet another midriff-baring chippy); she works out of Washington, D.C., not Music City; and she writes most of her own songs. And what songs they are -- richly detailed, consciously literate, and always on the emotional mark. "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" tracks the end of a long but stifling marriage; "I Feel Lucky" is a randy romp about lotteries and love; "I Take My Chances" is a self-defining anthem. Carpenter has fine taste in backup singers (Rosanne Cash and Shawn Colvin) and in cover songs, too. Her version of Lucinda Williams's "Passionate Kisses" was a deserved smash hit and won a pair of Grammy Awards. In all, Come On Come On yielded an astonishing seven Top 20 singles and sold more than three million copies. It's proof positive of what can happen if you stick to your guns, which, ironically, is as traditional a country-music sentiment as exists. Daniel Durchholz, Barnes & Noble

July 13, 2004: This album was released 12 years ago. It is (and will always be) one of my all-time favorites.
