About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Ten years ago, songwriter and arranger Jazzie B, along with producer-remixer Nellee Hooper and the Funki Dreds, successfully rode the crest of the British soul movement to the top of the charts with the brilliantly executed Club Classics Vol. One. Originally released in the U.S. as Keep on Movin', the album is here reissued as an anniversary edition with extra tracks. Soul II Soul's motto, "A happy face, a thumpin' bass, for a loving race," connected with a Reagan/Thatcher-weary audience; Hooper's programming shook the rafters; the singers -- especially Caron Wheeler -- delighted the ears; and hits like "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)," "Keep on Movin', " and "Jazzie's Groove" resonated infectious and sublime. The singles inspired classic remixes, and the best ones (including the "Back to Life" One World Remix) are included here. The album's lyrics come off a bit naive today, but Soul II Soul's optimism is still hard to resist, and the beats on "Happiness" and "African Dance" -- though sluggish by today's jungle and drum 'n' bass standards -- thump heartily. Unfortunately, Jazzie B's "loving race" vision dissolved in lawsuits and bankruptcy (Hooper went on to produce other dance and pop artists, including Madonna), but the pair definitely struck gold with Club Classics Vol. One. And we can live with that. Marie Elsie St. Léger, Barnes & Noble
