The Frankenstein Consort is yet another creative side-project for the ever prolific Erik Lindgren: the contemporary classical composer whose group Birdsongs of the Mesozoic made a critical splash with their classical take on "space-age jungle" music. The Consort's first album, Classical A-Go-Go (technically Lindgren's third solo release) features the pianist with an acoustic ensemble, and includes eight original compositions (including Lindgren's first serious composition, "Baroque-A-Go-Go," from 1973) alongside arrangements of Raymond Scott, Erik Satie, and Edgar Winter staples. Par for Lindgren's course, the album is full of technical brilliance, musical inside jokes, whimsy, and reverence. The lovingly arranged Raymond Scott pieces (in particular) have the same level of attention as the Beau Hunks' treatments of Leroy Shield's Little Rascals themes, though when Lindgren runs Scott through the Frankenstein grinder the note-for-note accuracy goes (welcomely) out the window. ~ J.
