August 30, 2000: Typically, Christmas albums have not excelled or innovated musically. After all, they are sentimental sellers whose stock rises as fans age. But in Christmas at Home, Mr. Osmond serves up all manner of delicious surprises. For example, God Rest You Merry is 30 seconds of magic; I won?t give the secret away, but this stunning interlude updates the phrase ?the Osmond family.? Deck the Halls/Hark the Herald Angels blew me away with vocals, keyboard, winds, percussion, guitar, cheers and laughter. Osmond has recreated classics (O Holy Night, Angels We Have Heard) with palpable joy and musical invention. And he delivers newer songs, such as After December, Mary Did You Know? and Come to the Manger, with a voice that at moments almost grabs your lapel. He seems to pull Christmas out of his very heart, with a depth that makes torch songs seem lackluster. His A Soldier?s King will remind fans of 1989 and Soldier of Love; it?s The Little Drummer Boy as Vietnam vet. Like Osmond's JOSEPH, Christmas at Home will be a classic
