Editorial Reviews

This disc has both unity and diversity -- essential qualities in a Christmas recording. The unifying factor is composer Michael Praetorius, and the diversity comes from the fact that four different works of the German Baroque master are represented: "Polyhymnia caduceatrix," "Musica Sionae," "Puericinium," and "Terpsichore." Under the expert and enthusiastic direction of Jeannette Sorrell, Apollo's Fire, Apollo's Singers, and Apollo's Musettes turn in performances that can only be described as inspired. Everything from the bumptious instrumental dances to the richest choral-orchestral hymns receives committed playing and singing from everyone involved, resulting in a disc that should delight those looking for a great classical Christmas disc. Although it can become a tad congested in the more richly scored hymns, the depth, detail, and warmth of Koch's digital recording is very impressive. James Leonard, All Music Guide
