A companion Sundazed reissue to Christmas with Buck Owens and His Buckaroos, this 1968 release finds Buck and band in a reflective mood, but with that razor-edged intensity intact. As usual, the Buckaroos are note-perfect, whether it's lead guitarist Don Rich switching over to acoustic for an evocative complement to Buck's thoughtful vocal on "Christmas Time Is Near" or the whole band rocking out and displaying some breathtaking mastery on two instrumentals, "The Jolly Christmas Polka" and "Christmas Schottische." Both hearken to the inventiveness that marked Buck's approach to music and his band's infallible command of any style thrown at them. Of course, Buck makes it all memorable with vocals that capture the complex feelings of the season, be they festive or downcast -- or both at once. Compared with Buck's first Christmas album, this one looks a little harder at the dark shadow trailing the glad tidings. David McGee, Barnes & Noble
