Leonard Bernstein had a knack for turning folks onto great music. Several generations of Americans had their first exposure to the classics through his legendary "Young People's Concerts" on television. The secret to Bernstein's success was that he never talked down to his audiences, no matter how young they were. You can hear this in the conductor's narration of Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," which is charmingly sincere and unaffected. Coupled with characterful performances of Britten's ingenious "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" and Saint-Saens' delightful "Carnival of the Animals," there's no finer classical recording for children.
