Editorial Reviews

For years, if you wanted a comprehensive Chicago hits collection, your choices were slim. 1975's single-disc/eleven-track collection, Greatest Hits (Chicago IX) remained your best bet, but it only included tracks from the group's beginning to the mid-'70s (without question their best years). On the other hand, if it was Chicago's power ballad direction of the '80s you were after, your only choice was 1989's Greatest Hits: 1982-1989. The very first collection to finally combine both eras together turned out to be the long overdue 2002 double disc from Rhino, The Very Best Of: Only the Beginning. So why another double-disc set comprised of the same exact material appeared only a year later, Chicago Story: The Complete Greatest Hits 1967-2002, is quite baffling. Of course, there's no denying the greatness of such selections as "Saturday in the Park," a 'new edit' of "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Beginnings" -- but unfortunately, the aforementioned 'lighter' later direction hasn't aged well at all (especially such fluff as "You're the Inspiration"). If you don't already own Only the Beginning, then the similar Complete Greatest Hits is recommended. Greg Prato, All Music Guide

September 17, 2004: I found this compilation excellent. On disc 1 you can listen to all those soft rock songs from the 70's and 80's, and on cd 2 the jazz-rock songs from the 70's and dance-pop songs from the 80's. Though "If She Would Have Been Faithful" is missing, i enjoyed this compilation a lot, i hear it almost every day.

March 10, 2003: First of all there are several differences between this cd and The Very Best of Chicago: Only The Beginning. The first difference of course it is not in chronological order but in my opinion that doesn't really matter because the songs seem to flow better on this cd. Second songs like If She Would Have Been Faithfull and Get Away are not included but this is an insignificant omission. Two songs not included on The Very Best of Chicago included here are Only you from Chicago 17 and Street Player from Chicago 13. The sound quality is great and the selections are wonderful this is a great cd that shouldn't be missed...
