El/Cherry Red's 2007 compilation The Changing of the Guard: Sixties London Pop Explosion is not your average '60s compilation, and not just because it chooses to concentrate on obscurities instead of hits (with the exception of the Small Faces, whose "Itchycoo Park" and "Here Come the Nice" are far and away the biggest and best-known songs here). This is really more of an oral documentary of the Swinging London of the mid-'60s, with songs by Les Fleur de Lys, Chris Farlow, Humble Pie, and the Amen Corner punctuated by classic interviews from Michael Caine, Mick Jagger, Julie Christie, Andrew Loog Oldham and, for some reason, Lee Marvin. It is certainly evocative of its time, and that's why it's an interesting compilation. Interesting is not quite the same thing as eminently enjoyable and, truth be told, The Changing of the Guard may be the kind of disc that is played only once or twice, but it is useful in how it paints a portrait of that time.
