Editorial Reviews

Juan Gabriel is one of Mexico's most prolific singer-songwriters. With the urbane refinement of Sting, the shirtsleeves populism of Springsteen, and the fey pianisms of Liberace thrown into the mix, Gabriel is a pop figure whose magnitude knows no equal in Anglo rock. Recorded live at one of Mexico's finest venues, the Teatro del Palacio in Bella Artes, this 21-track double set is a celebration of Gabriel's 25 years as a performer, delivering his customary tales of amorous betrayal, infidelity, and loss. All his classics are here, from the sadness and solitude of "Querida" (witness the crowd going wild during the opening lines) and "Paloma Negra" to, of course, his epic "Amor Eterno." The grand "Sin Dinero y Con Guitarra" medley features "No Tengo Dinero," an upbeat tune about the desperate longing of youth. The orchestra is in impeccable shape, wrapping each tune in a swirl of cascading violins and gorgeous horns. Gabriel's light rasp would be charming enough, but he also exudes boundless energy as an entertainer, and as demonstrated here, it's thoroughly contagious, inspiring the audience to sing along and live for the moment.
