About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

It was renowned producer Aluísio de Oliveira's idea to record, in 1963, a meeting attended by Tom Jobim, recently returned from the U.S., Dorival Caymmi, and Caymmi's family: sons Dori and Danilo, daughter Nana, and wife Stela (who wasn't supposed to sing, but she surrendered to de Oliveira's insistence, fortunately, and recorded one track, "Canção Da Noiva," taken from Caymmi's "Suíte Dos Pescadores"). Additionally, on this recording there are some Brazilian musicians who got international acclamation: bassist Sérgio Barroso and drummers Dom Um Romão and Edison Machado, arguably the best Brazilian drummer of all times.

The album, formerly an LP later released in CD format through Polygram, contains two until then unpublished songs that became instant hits, later true classics: Caymmi's "Das Rosas" and "Só Tinha Que Ser Com Você" (Tom Jobim/Aluísio de Oliveira). It also gave the two composers the opportunity to interpret material from other writers, on an album with more instrumental soloing than their previous releases. It was because of this album that Nana, until then married and living in Venezuela, decided to break with her domestic life and depart for a solo career as a singer. Also was important as a professional affirmation for Danilo, whose somewhat naïve though relaxed flute soloing betrayed his 15 years of age at that time. Caymmi has a strong grasp on the melodies, as usual, and Jobim is singing better than on his later albums. This historic album certainly appeals to every Jobim and Caymmi fan.
