Editorial Reviews

In the wake of Yo-Yo Ma's successful Silk Road Journeys, Deutsche Grammophon gets in on the act with its own collection of Silk Road-inspired music. While Ma's album focuses on new interpretations of traditional styles found along the ancient Asian trade route, this compilation collects familiar pieces by classical masters, each with an oriental flavor. So, Beethoven offers a Turkish March, Tchaikovsky his "Danse Arabe," and Borodin "In the Steppes of Central Asia," among others. Many of the works come from Russian composers -- Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev -- though Khachaturian and Nielsen also offer entries, including the famous "Sabre Dance" from Gayaneh. Not a conventional classical music compilation, Caravan: The Ultimate Silk Road Album reminds us that the music of the Silk Road lands has long been a source of inspiration to the great composers of the Western tradition. See also Smithsonian/Folkways's The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan, a two-CD set of traditional music produced in collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. EJ Johnson, Barnes & Noble
