CD - Special Edition
Capitol Records celebrates its 60th anniversary with the release of Capitol Records 1942-2002. The exquisitely designed, digitally-remastered 96-track, 6-CD boxed set pays tribute to some of the defining artists of popular music history, beginning with the pre-rock 'n' roll sounds of Stan Kenton, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, and Duke Ellington. Capitol's '60s discoveries -- the Beach Boys and the Beatles -- would help shape the label for years to come. Anthologized here for the first time, the Fab Four would also spawn the solo careers of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, who all turn up individually as well. Capitol's success with rock continued in the '70s with the Band, Pink Floyd, James Taylor, and Steve Miller, and on into the '80s with Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Heart, and the Beastie Boys. Closing out the label's contributions to the century are songs from Garth Brooks, Bonnie Raitt, Radiohead, and Foo Fighters. This Deluxe version is packaged in a 10x10" box, with a full-size 144-page clothbound "coffee table" collector's volume of classic artist photographs by noted photographers. Also available is a Special version, packaged in a "brick" format, with a 72-page photograph booklet. Barnes & Noble

Capitol Records 1942-2002 [Special Box Set] features six discs that dutifully cover six decades of music from the label that brought the world key recordings from the Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Duran Duran, Les Paul and Poison. It's an eclectic mix, but by presenting the cuts snug within the pop culture confines of the decade in which they were birthed, the pacing never suffers. It's a club sandwich with Freddie Slack & His Orchestra's "Cow-Cow Boogie [From Ride 'Em Cowboy]," the Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" and the Vines "Get Free" for bread, and it's a fascinating look at the ebb and flow of the music business.
