About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

Nikka Costa has always had plenty of loopy charm -- as borne out by her last, equally oddly titled outing, Everybody Got Their Something -- but over the past four years, she's sharpened the edges of her sound and her attitude. As a result, Can'tneverdidnothin' bubbles with an unflaggingly sweaty energy, a down-home vibe that recalls Ike & Tina Turner's heyday -- particularly on her cover of their "Funkier than a Mosquito's Tweeter." Naturally enough, that tune is driven by a powerful horn section, but big, bold guitars also come into play, as on "Till I Get to You," a sensual bump 'n' grind that could pass for an old-school Sly Stone jam. In keeping with her refusal to be pigeonholed, Costa peppers the disc with dreamy, Quiet Storm–styled ballads, the best of which, "Hey Love," would play equally well at a summer afternoon wedding or in the honeymoon suite later that night. Costa's strength, however, is her ability to give up the funk with a brassiness that's seldom overdone -- and on tracks like the supple "Swing It Around," she plays to that strength with a confidence that's nothing short of beguiling. April 12, 2006: She has the picture blend of rock, soul, and funk wrap into one.

October 26, 2005: This follow-up kicks major tail and is more than a worthy successor to "Everybody..." which also kicks major tail! I just saw her at a club in Boston and her live show is out of this world too. Anyone who enjoys these albums should tell everyone they know about them and about Nikka Costa - a unique and stellar musical talent.
