About this Artist

Editorial Reviews

As any student of evolution will tell you, history's primordial ooze is riddled with missing links, a role that this Cal-bred combo seems to fill in today's musical landscape. Young and well scrubbed enough to pass for a boy band, yet angst-ridden enough to fit in with the latest round of post-Pearl Jam semi-hard rockers (take Lifehouse, for instance), the Calling create a sound that both swooning girls and regular guys can understand. On songs like "Nothing's Changed" and "Wherever You Will Go," guitars chime and beckon, then deliver just enough power-chord muscle to keep things interesting. Singer Alex Hand's voice, however, is the band's calling card (no pun intended), as he proves on jump-for-joy love songs, such as the buoyant "Unstoppable," as well as downcast observations on the flip side of l'amour, most achingly on "Could It Be Any Harder." The formula is hardly a new one -- it's been tweaked over the years by bands like the Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, and Collective Soul -- but part of the reason it's endured is that, like potato chips, power ballads defy the listener to stop at just one. Go ahead and try. David Sprague, Barnes & Noble

January 26, 2006: Listening to The Calling is my calling (pun is intended). Not only is the lead singer gorgeous, but his voice is incredibly amazing. Every song on the Cd is extremely good, so when you have to do your homework, but don’t want to change Cds, this is the one to listen to. It is so hard to have a favorite song, because they are all good, it’s no wonder several of them were hits. The band’s music is totally well put together, and the guitar playing in wherever you will go is so beautiful, it will have you sighing every time you listen to it.
