The front-cover photograph of this compilation disc -- a companion to the book of the same title -- shows Cajun fiddler par excellence Michael Doucet; the back frames the king of zydeco, accordionist Clifton Chenier. The music in between captures the glory of both styles of southern Louisiana music, spanning from Doucet and Chenier's performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964 to today's top stars. There's music of traditional Cajun master Canray Fontenot and several evolutions of those who followed in his footsteps, from The Savoy/Doucet Band to Beausoliel to Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys. The other side of bayou music ranges from the stripped-down accordion chops of Boozoo Chavis to the modern combinations of Buckwheat Zydeco. Will you learn the secret of the difference between Cajun music and zydeco? Maybe not -- but you'll have a great time trying. Kerry Dexter, Barnes & Noble
