Editorial Reviews

One of Broadway's all-time classic scores is the basis for the best cast album in recent years. John Kander and Fred Ebb's 1966 masterwork, Cabaret, has been given exquisite new life in this 1998 Broadway production. Accentuating the malevolence lurking behind an already unsettling score, the revision of Cabaret encompasses material written for the brilliant 1972 film version, including "Mein Herr" and "Maybe This Time." The award-winning cast -- Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles, Alan Cumming as the Emcee, and Mary Louise Wilson as Fraulein Schneider -- score individual triumphs, their indelible characterizations on a par with earlier interpreters Jill Haworth, Joel Grey, and Lotte Lenya, and even the mesmerizing Liza Minnelli. Every drop of drama and excitement is palpable on this CD, due in large part to recording producer Jay David Saks, who captured the exuberant Kit Kat Klub numbers such as "Wilkommen," "Money," and "Don't Tell Mama" live before a responsive audience while also underscoring the stillness and emotional impact behind gut wrenchers like "I Don't Care Much," "What Would You Do?," and the memorable title number. David Elliot Cohen, Barnes & Noble

February 08, 2003: I'll never forget when I first heard this recording on LP in 1966 . From the opening bars of "Wilkomen" to the closing Finale, the Broadway production of "Cabaret" seemed to take place right there in my bedroom. That it was only a longplaying 33 1/3 vinyl record playing on my "suitcase" style stereo is a tribute to the genius of legendary record producer Goddard Lieberson , who was able to transform a big Broadway Show into an unforgettable listening experience. Joel Grey's immortal Tony Award winning performance as the Master of Ceremonies jumps out at you from the speakers. The Kander and Ebb songs have lost none of their wit and bite since the show's premiere, and the newly mastered CD improves on an already brilliant sound recording. This Original Broadway Cast Recording is the definitive version of this great production and the one to own.
