Even though he came from the theater himself, Bob Fosse, when he came to make a film of Harold Prince's musical Cabaret, did what most movie directors do, taking the 15-song score and cutting two-thirds of it to leave five songs -- "Wilkommen," "Two Ladies," "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," "If You Could See Her," and "Cabaret." (In addition, "Sitting Pretty" was performed instrumentally and "Married" in German.) He then allowed the show's songwriters, John Kander and Fred Ebb, to add material to emphasize the film's two musical stars, "Mein Herr" and "Maybe This Time" for Liza Minnelli and "Money, Money" for Minnelli and Joel Grey. ("Maybe This Time" was a Kander-Ebb song Minnelli had been singing since 1964.) The film was even more successful than the show, and the soundtrack album went gold, outselling the original Broadway cast album. It is not the record you want to buy to get the complete score, of course, and even at its 38-plus-minute running time it's padded. But it contains some definitive Minnelli performances, particularly her rendition of the title song. In the show and film, the song's upbeat, devil-may-care mood is in stark contrast to the downbeat conclusion of the plot, which finds lead character Sally Bowles stranded in Nazi Germany. Coming from Minnelli, there is an added subtext, as the performance can be read as a tribute to her mother, Judy Garland. And Grey is equally impressive, particularly in "Wilkommen" and "If You Could See Her." Cabaret won Academy Awards for Minnelli and Grey, but lost the Best Picture award, and a similar judgment can be made about the soundtrack album. Their performances are outstanding, but the album as a whole is a bit skimpy. Subsequent stage productions tended to incorporate the new film songs. (The 1996 CD reissue re-sequences the songs.) November 01, 2005: I've seen Cabaret on stage many times. I've seen a vast array of characters, positions, choreography and actors. But never have I seen anyone perform their parts, both physically and vocally, like Liza and Joel. If you've seen the movie, you've more than likely fallen in love with the songs. And here they are for you to sing along with.

January 24, 2002: I've been a fan of the film version of Cabaret since it's release. I absolutely LOVED ''Liza With A Z'', Liza Minelli's ''Singer'' sponsored TV Special and Soundtrack of the same name and couldn't wait until Cabaret was released. It's easy to see where Liza get's her talent but, actually she's in a class by herself and has in so many ways far surpassed her Mother and luckily inherited her Father's ability to get it on film. Cabaret is, was, and always will be an American Classic as far as film making goes. It's been added to the Archives of the Smithsonian Instution with 9 other films as a testiment to American Films. Bob Fosse's vision for the film and choreography, Joel Grey's incredible performance as the Master Of Ceremonies and Liza Minelli's over the top portrayal of Sally Bowles as chronicled here will never be surpassed. This soundtrack, while whittled down from the Original Broadway version is still a little package of Dynamite! Don't let yourself be conned into buying either of the Original Broadway Cast albums until you have heard the versions of the songs on this soundtrack album. Minelli and Grey got the Oscars because they deserved them and this Soundtrack Album reflects that. Even the German version of the song ''Heiraten/Married'' is more appropriate here than that offered in English in the stage versions. If you only buy one Original Motion Picture Soundtrack...this should be The One!
