This CD might be titled "Renée Fleming's Greatest Hits" except that 3 of the 15 tracks are brand-new recordings. And these 3 tracks in some ways encapsulate her art. She has proved herself a distinguished Straussian, for example -- check out her luminous interpretation of the Four Last Songs and a luscious disc of opera excerpts -- and her ecstatically passionate performance here of the song "Cäcilie" gives a tantalizing taste of her vocal splendor in this repertoire. She's a master of the Italian bel canto style, too. Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata is a new character for her (as of 2003), and until we get a complete recording of her in this important role, this deeply felt and also virtuosic interpretation of the famous scena "Ah, fors'è lui . . . Sempre libera" will have to suffice. Yet, Fleming has never forgotten her roots as a jazz singer, either, and her utterly natural and profoundly moving rendition of the Broadway standard "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel) is a testament to her amazing versatility. The other selections on the disc are garnered from a variety of sources. "Come scoglio" from Mozart's opera Così fan tutte, for example, is one of Fleming's first recordings (made in 1994), and the haunting aria from Villa-Lobos's Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 is from a charming crossover album featuring guitarist Lee Ritenour and pianist Dave Grusin. Rounded out with favorite songs and arias by Puccini (including "O mio babbino caro"), Gershwin, Dvorák, Massenet, and Rachmaninoff, this is a sweet souvenir of highlights from the acclaimed recording career of America's reigning diva. This Renée Fleming disc, By Request, is mostly a compilation of previously released material. There are three new tracks, "Ah fors' è lui" from Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata," the song "Cäcille" by Richard Strauss, and "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rogers & Hammerstein's musical "Carousel." The new recordings all sound fine, and Fleming is outstanding in the re-issued pieces as well. If you have the prior incarnations of these recordings, you may elect to pass on this collection unless you want the three new tracks. However, if you are unfamiliar with the voice of Fleming, By Request will prove an excellent and wholly satisfactory vehicle for getting to know her work. The recording is up to Decca's usual high standards, and the booklet includes several attractive photos of Fleming in addition to complete texts and translations for all of the lyrics sung.
