Editorial Reviews

The Audium reissue of these two Columbia albums by country great Ray Price is a godsend. Burning Memories, from 1964, is the first recording Price employed the liberal use of strings on; the album brought him the timeless hits "Release Me," the title track, and "Make the World Go Away." This was a blatant attempt, two years in the making, to cross over into the pop world for Price, and it worked. While country critics were scathing and many of the genre's fans were wondering is he had sold out, Price's profile was on the rise with mainstream pop music consumers. Burning Memories was a gamble that paid off big-time, though some concessions were made initially, and Touch My Heart from 1966 was one of them. Johnny Paycheck, a former bandmember of Price's, wrote the title track; it showcased Price straddling the honky tonk and pop worlds with more balance. Strings were not as prevalent as fiddles, and the steel guitar made a big-time return to the center of the Price sound. But the songs were something else again; they could be interpreted either way. Hard country examples were Merle Haggard's "Swinging Doors" and Hank Cochran's "I Lie a Lot," with the title track and Dallas Frazier's "There Goes My Everything" showcasing the new balladic style with a rough-hewn grace and silky aplomb, making for the last country rave-up in Price's catalog until the late '80s. Here are 23 tracks -- presenting the latter album first -- that offer an astonishing portrait of an artist in transition. The sound is good if not excellent, and the liner notes by Nick Shaffran offer an inside portrait of the recording sessions. This is the only way to get either of these albums on CD, and is priced right to move. Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

January 17, 2007: I just received this CD and I have to tell you, it excedes my expectations! I have been a fan of Ray Price for 40 years. I don't agree that the background violins overwhelms the songs...He is like great wine, he gets better and better with age! Also, Happy Birthaday, Ray! he had his 81st birthday on 1/12/07. Sweet Memories,is an incredible rendition. I get chills still when I hear Danny Boy(It's not on this CD), even though I remember that some of his not so good fans, boo'd and shouted out obscenities at him on stage the first time he sang it on stage, after recording it on his Danny Boy album. I love that album, I still have it on vinyl. Here Comes My Baby Back Again is so beautiful!Burning Memories, Soft Rain, Just Out Of Reach(not on this CD)...He was a very innovative and way ahead of his time type of Country singer. He deserves all and every accolade that all of us who adore him can give him. He is not only a legend, but a humble and quiet man who only wants to give his audience the best he has to offer of himself and his kind heart.

January 13, 2007: I became a lover of Ray Price music when I was 17 years old and the man that became my husband introduced me to his music. Well, I no longer have that husband, but I am still a fan of Ray Price and I always will be. His beautiful renditions of Here Comes My Baby Back Again, Crazy Arms, Sweet Memories.. all his songs are priceless gems... I had every LP he ever put out since I became a his lifetime fan. I am grateful that a lot of his music has been put on Cd's...I no longer have his LP's they became so scratched and warped, that they no longer could be played. If you enjoy a great voice, great music and don't mind a few tissues for your heart-broken tears, you will love this CD.
