July 14, 2000:
Any time a Hollywood composer like Lalo Schifrin revisits his work from 30 years ago and records it again with such verve and clarity I'll give 'em five stars. Here Schifrin and the West Deutsche Rundfunk Big Band give us multiple takes on many of the film's cues. Track 1, ''Bullitt Main Title (movie version) has never sounded better. It has a kind of punch and drive you don't hear even on the new Warner DVD of the film, though WB generously went back and remastered the original monaural music track for stereo surround. My only disappointment on this CD is Track 4, ''Cantata for Combo.'' The instrumentation is similar to what's in the film, but this clunker is simply not the same piece. Fortunately one can listen to the original soaring, grooving flute and bass number in the Coffee Canata scene on the DVD. There's almost no dialog or effects to get in the way. Quintessential Lalo!
