Editorial Reviews

The final album of all-new music released under the Partridge Family banner was also a harsh reminder of just how completely David Cassidy's solo career had eclipsed the nest in which he'd hatched. The album itself stiffed in commercial terms, failing even to spin off a decent hit single, while the performances all lean a lot closer towards the Cassidy solo ideal -- soft ballads, tight rockers -- than the all-for-one harmonies and joy that characterized the Partridges' earlier releases. It is still an entertaining record, of course, but the old exhilaration is sorely missing, as though the entire album was squeezed, blood from a stone-style, out of a wholly less than enthusiastic crew. And at the end of the day, the album's failure should be no surprise. The world had moved on from the days when the Partridges ruled the roost; so had David Cassidy. And, after this album, so had everybody else. Dave Thompson, All Music Guide

September 29, 2008: After years of legal delay, the lone album from the 4th and final &quot contractual obligation&quot season of &quot The Partridge Family&quot comes to CD 35 years after its original release in October of 1973. You can read and watch &quot Behind the Music&quot etc. for the David Cassidy contract drama, exit, and resulting halt of the Partridge Family &quot machine&quot by the hands that built it. Listen to &quot Bulletin Board&quot for the MUSIC. This album may not have had the benefit of the promotion of the early albums, but &quot Bulletin Board&quot displays a growth and development in the Partridge Family sound that had been missing in the previous three albums. The rich overtones of David Cassidy's natural, matured voice are allowed to shine in front of the intricate background vocals that seem to be arranged mindful of the fact that the Partridge kids are now older. The harpsichord of the past albums has been replaced with electric sitar and clavinet. The expert, varied guitar sounds of Larry Carlton are featured heavily throughout while Hal Blaine's drums seem to take advantage of Brian Forster's improved &quot play-synching&quot on the show. All of the 11 original songs are here (10 were used in the show)including a funked up cover of Mark James' &quot Roller Coaster&quot , a beautiful version of Carole King &amp Gerry Goffin's &quot Oh No Not My Baby, &quot I Wouldn't Put Nothin over on You&quot featuring the energetic piano of Michael Omartian, Tony Romeo's &quot I Never Get over You, and the exhilerating &quot I Heard You Singing Your Song&quot written by Barry Mann. &quot Bulletin Board&quot is a totally enjoyable album that will have you wondering what another season might have produced. Had this album received the promotion of the first, it would have been a chart topper as well. Collector's Choice is to be commended for adding two Bones Howe produced tracks with Shirley Jones front and center instead of &quot blended into the background vocals&quot including the gorgeous &quot Ain't Love Easy&quot from the third season.
