Genius or lunacy -- take your pick. But either way, give credit to Aaron Weiss and gang for another unique taste of Christian indie rock sentiment. In more of his half-shouting, stream-of-consciousness style, Weiss throws any sense of traditional song form out the door. Lyrically speaking, Brother, Sister is more cryptic and nonsensical than almost anything else in Tooth & Nail Records' catalog. It proves an arduous task to identify any faith-based themes on the disc besides a desperate plea to reconcile one's place before God. Although there is less pounding rock than on its debut album, the group continues to explore sounds that make you want to shudder and tap along simultaneously. The one theme appears to be an obsession with mischievous critters -- spiders, porcupines, and wolves, to name a few. April 03, 2009: the phrase "i do not exist..." is a common theme on this 4th album from the east coast quintet. I say 4th album because many are unaware of thier pre-tooth and nail release entitled "I never said I was Brave". I can also tell you that "INSIWB" and "brother, sister" are opposite ends of the evolutionary chain of albums inbetween. MWY, as many have come to call them, have consistently proven that the key to thier success and survival as a band has been re-invention on every album. THis album, in particular, is the most accessable and most immediately palatable to the casual listener. It is a great album for those who are not familiar with the band's previous work to cut thier teeth on. Those who have been around since "INSIWB" or "A<->B life" might disagree with Aaron's choice to sing more than the shouted word poetry that we have come to embrace as the norm for this band. I say bollocks to that. Music must evolve with the band or the sound becomes stale (hence the present state of the hxc scene, but that is a different rant entirely). MWY demonstrate on this album that sound can change but the integrity of the music can remain the same. They aren't interested in recreating a previous album, but aren't opposed to remembering previous victories either (see 'Nice and Blue, pt. 2'). This album is thier greatest to date and I cannot wait until next month (5/09) for thier 5th installment. For all you 'pureists' out there, skip it. I hear that Arron sings the whole way through on it.
